There are at least 1,000 different kinds of large dog beds out there. I’ve reviewed enough of them by now to know a lot of ins-and-outs. As a consumer, it’s best to be prepared logistically when making long-term purchases like a bed for your large dog. Shopping for a dog bed is really more about the dog than the bed itself.
If you’re shopping online, you’ll realize (pretty quickly) that there are just too many options to pick one out of the blue. In fact, there are probably more large dog bed options than smaller bed options.
The larger your dog is, the more considerations you’ll have, and in larger proportions: mobility, durability, usability, and price for instance. Despite all the different designs, fabrics, fillings, and dimensions to choose from, narrowing down the perfect bed for your dog can either be easy or difficult. Should something like shopping for a dog bed be overwhelming? Of course not! It’s only a matter knowing what you need before you search.
This may seem like a no-brainer, but I’ve spent hundreds of dollars on beds that lasted less than six months. Pets are expensive enough, am I right? They’re expensive and unpredictable and, usually at some point, destructive. We spend years training them not to destroy our stuff, once they have something all their own they tear it to shreds, or defecate on it. All in good fun though, we love them just the same! It does beg the question though, how much money do you really need to spend on a product that’ll naturally get beat up? Reminder.
The rest of this review will focus on “large” dog beds only, i.e., beds for large dogs. Sorry to leave anybody out, but as I said, there’s just too much ground to cover with large dog beds alone. Small and medium-sized beds each deserve reviews of their own! What probably brought you here in the first place was your large dog, or your friend’s large dog.
Hey, everyone needs somewhere to rest- you, me, dogs, cats, fish, birds, all of us. Maybe you plan to adopt/foster a large dog and want to set up the perfect home for him or her. Looking at large dog beds is necessary to creating the comfortable, clean, and compassionate environment you want for you and your large dog.
There are two main things to consider. First, what kind of large dog do you have? Are they full grown? How much do they weigh or will they weigh in a few years? Look at the breed’s characteristics: shedding, power, drool levels, and build are important ones. Look at the personality of your dog too; every dog has their own personality. By now you should know some of your dog’s habits, behaviors, likes, and dislikes. Be honest, is your dog prone to “accidents” or “marking their territory?” Do they like to relax around people or would they rather keep to themselves? Physical and medical issues are important too. Just as when we’re injured, we need a comfortable space to heal and rest.
Some large dog beds could actually be a bad choice for your dog, keeping them from optimal health and happiness. Sensitivities to allergies (dust mites, wool, mold, cotton), stomach conditions, arthritis, scoliosis, and recent surguries are just a few things that can affect your dog’s bed needs. The second thing to consider is where you’ll put the bed The environment, the climate, soil levels, temperatures, will all affect the longevity of your item and its usefulness to the dog. There are tons of options for large dog beds, both indoor and outdoor. There arre certainly beds that will keep your dog cool in the summer like water pads and cots. You’ll have to consider how much space you’re willing to spare for the bed, and how big you want it to be. If you wanted to, you could customize your “bed” to span over thirty square feet! Most dimensions are listed online, so get your tape measurer ready. Large dog bed lengths typically range from 20″ to 55″.
The possibilities are endless, but I’ll keep reiterating that this is more about your dog than the bed. It’s unlikely your dog is more than 6′ long on all fours; curled up they’ll be one-half to two-thirds of their standing size. Variants on the market include price, durability, cleanability, mobility. Let’s knock out pricing first. If you’re in the market for a “new” dog bed for your large dog, it will probably cost you from $25 to over $250. Pricing is mainly dependent on size, product development, and materials (fabrics). Does a gel-infused memory foam orthopedic sofa-bed sound costly? Well, that’s because it is. Use your common sense. Know what you’re paying for and why. The options are certainly available if you want to spend top-dollar for your dog. They always have been. But try to make sure you’re getting what you pay for. If your dog sheds, or you want something easy to clean, get a bed with a removable cover you canclean in a washing machine. Slip covers made of nylon, microfiber, or pleather deter dog hairs.
There are additional covers on the market and disposable ones, but make sure to use them as directed and always keep them clean. Failing to keep your dog bed clean is a risk to your dog and your family. Many large dog beds are designed to be chew proof. Certain fabrics, fillers, and designs will deter your doggy from ripping your dollars to shreds. If that’s the reason you need a new bed in the first place, never fear Optimize your search with these specific keywords: chew resistant, puncture proof, durable, resistant, ballistic.Full disclosure. On any average night you’ll find me curled with a book in bed next to my darling Pit-mix Katy. She sleeps with me. Pitbulls (especially females) are a highly affectionate and experts at cuddling, so I enjoy letting her sleep with me. All the same, I know the value of a bed for my large dog.
Katy sleeps with me at night and still has three seperate beds! One is used downstairs near the fireplace. Another I put in the back of my car, which is a wagon. The last bed we have is an steel-based cot, which we’ll bring with us camping. It’s easy to assemble with a screwdriver, and spacious enough for her to feel safe with a blanket. There are so many options on the dog bed market because there are so many kinds of dogs! Even within the same breed dogs tastes can varyl Sketching out a map of you and your large dog’s needs will absolutely help you select the perfect bed for your companion.
Coolaroo Elevated Pet Bed with Knitted Fabric
Coolaroo Elevated Cot- I find this cot incredibly easy to use and to set up. Its design is functional, innovative, and stands apart from other large dog bed designs. Until recently, I didn’t even know doggy-cots existed; and to be honest, I couldn’t imagine a better product for an active outdoor lifestyle.
All you need is a screwdriver and you’re on the trails… Easier to set up than a tent, tear proof, and able to support 100 lbs of dog.
Majestic Pet Suede Bagel Dog Bed
The Majestic Suede Bagel Bed (Petsupplyfactory) A nice product for a low-key dog, or perhaps one in their sunset years.
The faux suede sure looks lush, it’s also waterproof! The material would add add to the cozy aesthetic to your living or bedroom. A few considerations should be made relative to the material though, the faux suede, because it holds odors easier than other fibers.
Do wash the bed before use, just as you would with new bedding of your own. If you have a dog with longer or shedding hair you may need to wash the bed more often. Size wise it runs up to 52″, a couple mid-sized dogs could easily share this bed if they were so inclined.
